A Look at Combined CEO-Chairs

A review of our CompanyIQ® corporate governance leadership data indicates that the prevalence of combined CEO-chair roles has changed only slightly since 2019. Only two indices show an increase.
Dow 30, NASDAQ 100, S&P 100, and S&P 500 companies lead the indices with the greatest number of CEOs serving also as chairman of the board in 2021. Here are the statistics by index:
- Russell 3000 – 34%
- Russell 2000 – 31%
- Russell 1000 – 39%
- S&P 600 – 32%
- S&P 500 – 46%
- S&P 400 – 29%
- S&P 100 – 62%
- NASDAQ 100 – 62%
- Dow 30 – 70%.
